Match Report: AFC Wimbledon 5-1 Walsall

27 April 2024

The Saddlers suffered a heavy defeat on the road on the final day of the 2023/24 Sky Bet League Two campaign as AFC Wimbledon recorded a resounding 5-1 win at the Cherry Red Records Stadium.

A hat-trick from Omar Bugiel was complimented by a fine strike from Ronan Curtis and an unfortunate own goal from Mo Faal to give the home side all three points on the day.

The home side opened the scoring after just nine minutes as a Lee Brown cross was met superbly by Bugiel 12-yards out and his precise header flew past Jackson Smith in the Saddlers goal.

It wasn’t long before the Saddlers got themselves level though as Faal was fouled inside the penalty area and Isaac Hutchinson stepped up to slot the ball past Nik Tzanev for his 15th goal of the season in all competitions.

However, less than 10 minutes later and the home side were back ahead as another cross from Brown evaded everyone inside the 18-yard box barring Bugiel who guided the ball calmly past Smith.

Seven minutes after the restart and Bugiel completed his hat-trick as his effort from 10-yards out took a deflection off a Saddlers man to wrong foot Smith and the shot found the side netting.

Just three minutes later and Wimbledon had themselves another as a cross from the left once again evaded everyone inside the penalty area and Curtis was on hand to thump the ball into the roof of the net.

And the home side added their fifth of the afternoon just after the hour mark as a left-wing corner was unfortunately flicked on by Faal and it found the far top corner.

Despite a host of changes from Saddlers Head Coach Mat Sadler, his side were unable to find a way back into the game and the home side were able to see out the game to seal the victory.
