Match Report: Walsall 2-1 Swindon Town

16 April 2024

Danny Johnson scored a dramatic 89th minute winner to ensure Walsall claimed three points against Swindon Town to close the gap on the play-off places.

Mo Faal opened the scoring after just 11 minutes but despite dominating for large parts of the game, the Robins levelled midway through the second half through Paul Glatzel.

The Saddlers regrouped and Johnson fired home the winner in some style.

Mat Sadler made two changes to the team that started the defeat to Notts County.

Ross Tierney came into the side in place of the suspended Brandon Comley while Faal replaced Jamille Matt who dropped to the bench.

The Saddlers started on the front foot and had two opportunities in the eighth minute when Ryan Stirk clipped in a lovely cross into the path of Faal but the striker miss-hit the ball and the chance went begging. Moments later, Josh Gordon latched onto Faal’s touch and struck it first time but his low shot clipped the outside of the post.

Walsall were rewarded for their early pressure after 11 minutes when Faal made up for his early miss as he headed in Isaac Hutchinson’s corner from close range.

The striker could have had a second on 23 minutes when he headed Stirk’s cross wide as the Saddlers continued to dominate the first half.

Swindon offered little in the opening period with their first real effort coming on 38 minutes when Frazer Blake-Tracy’s header was blocked before the Saddlers cleared the danger.

As the half drew to a close, J. Gordon went on a fantastic run from the edge of his own box into the attacking third and found Hutchinson with a great cross but the midfielder fired his shot over the bar and the hosts went into the break with a one goal lead.

The Saddlers continued in the same vein in the second half and almost added a second on 53 minutes when Ross Tierney played a teasing ball across the six yard box that was missed by Faal but then it was met by L. Gordon at the back post but the wing-back fired over.

Swindon had their first real spell of possession after that and they made it count on 68 minutes when a tidy move saw the ball played into the path of Glatzel who smashed the ball into the top far corner to level the contest.

Sadler made a change immediately after the goal as Douglas James-Taylor replaced J. Gordon.

On 78 minutes, the Saddlers boss rolled the dice with a triple substitution as Matt, Danny Johnson and Tom Knowles, returning from injury, were all introduced.

It had the desired effect as well as two of them combined in the 89th minute when Matt headed Taylor Allen’s cross into the path of Johnson who rifled it into the net in emphatic fashion to send the Poundland Bescot Stadium into delirium.
